Flue Lining for solid fuel stoves

Flue Lining for solid fuel stoves

We install stoves every day of the week.  We are often asked if they need lining to conform to building regulations.  About 85% of the stoves we install are fitted with flexible twin wall liners.

Officially, a chimney does not need to be lined if it is inspected by an approved chimney sweep and they confirm it is safe to use.  The certificate they leave will mean it is signed off for only 1 year, as it must be checked at least every 12 months.  Chimneys can pass one year and not the next after a solid fuel appliance is installed.

We advise customers to install a stove with a liner because it makes the stove draw better and reduced the chance of down draft issues.  You also have the peace of mind that the liner will have a guarantee of 10 years or 20 years, often lasting longer than this if regularly swept in line with the manufacturers recommendations.

The image of a stove in an inglenook fireplace is a good example of a stove that needs lining.  These flues often have very rough brickwork which have many uneven surfaces that stop the smoke travelling smoothly up the flue.  By installing a liner you are creating a sealed flue system that the smoke can easily and safely pass through the chimney up to the chimney pot.

Issues that increase a chimney having anti-static down draft issues are:

-  Tall building around a property
-  Nearby trees that are taller than the chimneystack.
-  Geographical location, for example, being at the top or bottom of a hill.
-  Cold Flues
-  External chimneys stacks or tall chimneystacks.

We have our own scaffold towers that we can use which avoids the large cost of hiring scaffolding.  This means that we can work to heights of up to 14m.

We are Pasma Trained and registered for installing these scaffold towers.
