History of the 'Clean Air Act' and smoke control areas

The original Clean Air Act was introduced in 1956 to deal with the smog produced by widespread burning of coal by factories and homes.  The smog was responsible for many deaths of people in the UK and the Act gave the Local Authorities the power to control the emissions of smoke, grit, dust and fumes.  Smoke control areas were introduced and are now in effect in many large towns and cities.

With the changes in industry and how we heat our homes, the UK has seen a dramatic reduction in concentrations of smoke and levels of sulphur dioxide between the 1950 and the present day.

A Smoke Control Area means the Local Authority sees it as an offence to burn ‘unauthorised fuel’.  Simply put – you cannot emit smoke from a chimney inside a Smoke Control Area.  The fine in place for emitting Smoke is £1,000 per offence.
