How long does it take to get back the money of an installation of a wood burning stove?
After another announcement from Centrica, the owners of British gas, confirming that gas prices will increase by 25% for the Winter 20011/20012 winter season, we have been regularly asked how long till by installation pays for itself?
Depending on what preparation works needs completing an average cost of a installation can be anywhere from £1500 upwards for a Defra approved wood burning stove into a 10m chimney flue using a 316/316 grade, 10 year guarantee flexible liner. Sometimes the existing hearth can be kept, as stoves require a smaller depth hearth than a solid fuel open fire. So if converting a gas open fire, the smaller gas hearth depth required for a gas fire is perfect for a wood burning stove installation by one of our HETAS fitters.
If the average for installing a DEFRA approved,
smoke exempt wood burning or multifuel stove is around £1500 including some building works, solid fuel cowl, adapters and fire cements, it would take only a couple of years to get back the installation costs now that gas prices have continued to increase by 25%. During the 2010/2011 winter season we would advise that the original investment in having a smoke exempt wood stove installed would be paid for by the saving on buying wood for stoves rather than gas for your boiler to heat your home in 3 years. In only a year this is now around 2 years for the investment to pay for itself.
If you have a free wood source or are planning on trimming that large oak at the bottom of the garden, then you will be able to see a return on your investment of installing a wood stove.
Stove wood is best bought 1 year ahead to season properly by leaving it outside and under cover. Burning wood is a eco-friendly way of heating your home. Trees are a renewable energy source, meaning that the amount of carbon produced while burning the stove wood, is absorbed during the time the tree is growing in a forest. Smoke exempt, wood burning stoves are very efficient and actually burn most of the small amount of smoke off, making them very clean burning stove burners. Wood for wood stoves needs to be as dry as possible, normally 20% or less moisture content is fine, unless burning Ash logs, which some say can be burnt wet! We would always advise it was dried out for a year, but it is a common wood fact that it does not need drying out under cover in a log store for as long as other wood for stoves.
