Why do I need to use an approved chimney sweep?
Approved chimney sweeps will issue a certificate of sweeping confirming the chimney is safe to use. They are fully insured and have the experience and knowledge to explain the results of the integrity test to you. They are able to pressure test your chimney and will use the correct brushes for your chimney or flue. Often the chimney sweep advertising in the back of the local paper does not have the knowledge or the correct tools to sweep your
liner or
stove correctly. Always use a
NACS registered chimney sweep.
We advise not use the number for a sweep out of the back of your local paper as often these are people who are not registered.
An NACS approved and registered sweep will be on the NACS website and will carry the correct brushes for your twin wall flue system and issue a certificate.
They will also not have any soot entering the room when sweeping and will leave certificate of sweeping confirming the chimney is safe to use for a period of 1 year, this will detail the condition of the flue on the inside.
The truth is that 80% of Victorian and Edwardian chimney flues would need lining if they were pressure tested.
We advise that liners should be used on all applications if at all possible to insure the fireplace does not leak a few years after the installation. The reinstated stove or fireplace could deteriorate an already deteriorating flue at a quicker rate, whether it is for a solid fuel or gas fire.
